The Haunting of the Alaskan Hotel

Alaskan Hotel – Juneau County, Juneau, Alaska

Built in 1913 by the McCloskey brothers and Jules B, the Alaskan Hotel is a byproduct of the Gold Rush that took place between the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The hotel is only known to have one unsettled spirit roaming its halls; an apparition by the name of Alice. Apparently, in life, Alice was the wife of one of the miners seeking his fortune in gold. Alice’s husband went off to the mines one day and didn’t return when expected. Alice ran out of money and believed that her husband was not going to come back. With this in mind, Alice turned to prostitution for money and solicited her goods in the Alaskan Hotel. Apparently Alice’s husband did return some weeks later and when he found out what she had been doing, he became enraged and killed her in the hotel.

Since that day, many guests and employees have reported seeing Alice’s apparition throughout the hotel, especially in room 219. Guests repeatedly ask to be moved after being assigned to this room. Some have reported seeing Alice sitting on the bed there. Others have claimed that she touched them. Alice’s spirit has also been seen in the bar, in the hallways and in mirrors.

One very odd paranormal incident happened to a woman who had just recently begun working at the hotel. The woman went into one of the downstairs bathrooms and found it to be beautifully decorated in vintage nineteen-hundred, Victorian style furnishings. When the woman returned to the same bathroom later, the décor was modern and totally different than the first time she entered!

Even today, guest still make their claims and employees still find themselves looking over their shoulders, feeling someone might be there with them.

The Haunting of the Argo Hotel & Steakhouse

Argo Hotel – Knox County, Crofton, Nebraska

Photograph ©Nebraska State Historical Society

Built in 1911, the Argo Hotel has had reports of paranormal activity for some time and today, claims are still rolling in. Current owners renovated after purchasing the building in 1994. It was during these restorations that the bones of an infant were found inside a burlap bag, sealed up in a concrete wall.

Some of the claims made by Argo employees and patrons include: unexplainable and inconsistent cold spots in various parts of the building, flickering lights despite the fact that the place was rewired, the unexpected and bizarre shattering of drinking glasses.

One apparitions has been observed in the business; a female specter that is said to call for her child. This apparition has been, not only seen and heard, but also felt; as some have claimed they were touched.

A second apparition who has only been heard is that of a baby. Many have reported hearing this phantom baby crying during the night and after the discovery of infant bones, I’d say an infant spirit is definitely fathomable.

The Haunting of the Bullock Hotel

The Bullock Hotel – Lawrence County, Deadwood, South Dakota

Photograph ©sometwittery.com

Seth Bullock, founder of the Bullock Hotel, is a legend in his own right. Seth was appointed sheriff two days after he entered the rowdy town of Deadwood in 1876. At that time, Deadwood was a breeding ground for gunfights, barroom brawls and murder.

Seth was already known for his position as a Republican Senator in the Territorial Senate of Montana at the young age of 22. He was responsible for requesting that Congress establish Yellow Stone as a national park. In 1873, he became Sheriff of Lewis and Clark County in Montana, as well as, an auctioneer and commission merchant in Helena. And if that weren’t enough, he went on in his lifetime to establish a horse ranch, become a US Marshall, and the first resident of South Dakota to plant alfalfa. These are only a few of Seth Bullock’s accomplishments in life; you can read more about this amazing man by clicking here!

It seems that Seth was not only a mover and a shaker in life, but also in death. Seth Bullock isn’t the only restless spirit haunting the Bullock Hotel, but he seems to be the most active!

Seth’s apparition has been spotted walking along the hallways of the second and third floors and many have heard his footsteps when he was not visible. Many guests have heard a deep male voice call out their names when no other living person was present! And, occasionally guests will report hearing happy whistling in the hallways. Also, on one occasion, a small boy became lost from his parents. The child’s parents were a little more than surprised when the child told them that a nice cowboy helped him to find their room!

Seth Bullock isn’t the only specter walking the halls of the hotel; there are apparently a few more!!

It is believed that Seth Bullock’s former Employee Manager still roams the hotel. Many employees have made claims that strange things occur when they are sitting idly and doing nothing while on the clock. Some of these reports include: glasses shaking, plates flying across the room, kitchen appliances coming on, lights turning on and off, objects being moved, their names being called out when no one else was around, barstools moving on their own, a broken clock in room 305 chiming, cleaning carts moving and one employee reported being sprayed by one of the shower heads while she was finishing up cleaning the shower.

Many guests have seen another apparition, a young girl, before she disappears into thin air! This child is also thought to be responsible for unrolling rolls of toilet paper in the guest bathrooms, turning on lights and turning on water faucets!

Some of the other paranormal reports within the hotel include: guests being tapped on the shoulder by unseen hands, electrical gadgets going haywire, moving shadows in the rooms, whispers and more!!

The Bullock Hotel seems to be riddled with paranormal activity and some psychics claim that there are more than 37 restless spirits residing within its walls.

One thing is for sure, guests and employees alike make claims of their experiences almost every day and the activity never seems to die down! Perhaps it never will!

The Haunting of the Meeting Street Inn

Meeting Street Inn – Charleston County, Charleston, South Carolina

Photograph ©Chasing Parades

Built in the 1870s, the Meeting Street Inn was originally constructed to house several different businesses on Meeting Street. Today, it is a thriving bed and breakfast, however, the spooks stay free of charge.

In room 303, guests and employees have claimed to be unexplainably locked out of the room. When the door was then unlocked using the master key, the door still would not open, as if someone were holding it closed from the other side. When someone ran at the door to break it down, imagine his or her surprise when the door swung wide open on its own!! After the room was inspected, there was no plausible explanation for this occurrence!

In room 107, a female entity made herself known by appearing in front of a vacationing couple, right at the foot of their bed! The couple described her as being a solid person from the waist up, however, the lower half of the woman was nearly transparent and completely invisible where her ankles and feet should have been. The shocked couple merely starred in horror as the apparition floated to the door, opened it and disappeared!

There are two other known spirits restlessly roaming the inn. These two entities are thought to be members of the family who originally built the three-story house and they don’t seem to be too much trouble.

The Haunting of the Battery Carriage House Inn

Battery Carriage House Inn – Charleston County, Charleston, South Carolina

Photograph ©Kinggoji

Built in 1843, the carriage house inn houses eleven guest rooms and is located on a larger estate occupied by a private mansion. This main mansion was abandoned during the Civil War because it was so close to enemy lines at the time.

In 1870 a Union officer named Colonel Richard Lathers purchased the house, however, he later sold the house due to the enormous amount of money that it would take to renovate it.

In 1874 the mansion changed hands again, this time being purchased by Andrew Simonds and the estate stayed in the Simonds family until the late 1920’s and then abandoned again.

Today the place is owned by the Hasties’ who have restored the mansion to its former beauty.

How long the mansion has been haunted is unknown. All accounts are taken from recent reports beginning around 1992 when the house was renovated.

In the carriage house, many have reported seeing the apparition of a tall man dressed in an overcoat. This apparition has walked right up to guests who were in their bed in room 8. He is also known for heavy breathing. One guest was brave enough to reach out in an attempt to touch the restless spirit and was growled at by the entity before it quickly dissipated.

Another guest to stay in room 8, who I might add did not believe in ghosts, quickly changed his mind when a chair was thrown and crashed into a wall, the toilet seat slammed shut for no reason and he had the overwhelming feeling that something was hovering over him!

In room 10, guests have claimed to see the apparition of another man float right through the door and into their room. One guest reported that this same spirit lay right down in the bed!

Some of the other guests to room 10 have reported seeing a man in their peripheral vision and when they turned he quickly disappeared. Some guests have heard phantom footsteps inside of the room when no one else was there. Some have seen the shadow of a man on the wall when no man was standing in the room. Some have photographed orbs in the room. And, one woman tried to video tape the room in an attempt to catch the spirit on film but was shocked when she played the tape back and discovered that this same entity had stood right in front of the camera, blocking out everything in the cameras view and they could hear breathing!!

In the raised basement rooms, guests have claimed that their cell phone that was shut off, turned itself on in the early morning hours or they were awakened to the sound of running water but the sound stopped as the entered the bathroom and the inside of the sink and tub was still dry!

Reports still pour in from guests who have had their own paranormal experiences in the Carriage House Inn. Due to the age of the place and the fact that it survived the brutal Civil War, it’s really no surprise that it’s so active with restless spirits.

The Haunting of the Harmony Inn

Harmony Inn – Butler County, Harmony, Pennsylvania

Photograph ©Collectable Webs

Built in 1856 by Austin Pearoe, this inn was originally used as a private residence. After the Civil War the home went on to become a hotel, livery stable, boarding house and more.

With the home passing hands so many times over the years, it’s hard to say exactly who is responsible for the paranormal activity within. Locals in the town of Harmony blame some of the activity on a man called “Barney” who apparently took a tumble down the staircase and died from a broken neck. However, regardless of whose haunting it, it definitely has some activity to substantiate the claims made by visitors and owners.

Many visitors and employees have said that they feel as if they’re being watched while they’re in the house. Most of these people also say that they don’t feel threatened by this gawking entity.

Some of the more noticeable activities include; objects moving on their own, cold spots and gusts of cold air that seem to come out of nowhere, unexplainable mists, electrical gadgets going haywire and the apparition of a man appearing in mirrors throughout the house.

Several apparitions have appeared in the house, as well as, outside. Many have spotted a female apparition in the entryway. Most describe this apparition as older with an early nineteen hundreds hairdo and dress.

Today, the inn still has claims of the paranormal from guests and employees alike.

The Haunting of the Stone Lion Inn

Stone Lion Inn – Logan County, Guthrie, Oklahoma

Photograph ©O.K.P.R.I.

This lovely Greek Revival Victorian was built in 1907 by a very wealthy man named F.E. Houghton. Mr. Houghton and his wife had the house built to supply more living space for their twelve children. Unfortunately, the Houghton’s lost one of their children at a very young age. Little Augusta had been struck with the whooping cough and one evening when the maid administered her medicine, she was accidentally given the wrong drug. After digesting the liquid, Augusta died of an overdose.

Mr. Houghton owned the house until sometime in the 1920’s when it was then sold and turned into a boarding house and then after that it was turned into a funeral home. In 1986 the house was sold again; this time it was turned into the inn that it is today.

There are two known entities that still roam the house today, that of August Houghton and a male apparition who is believed to be Mr. Houghton himself.

Many who have been in the house have claimed to hear the sounds of little feet going up and down the stairs when no child was about. These little footfalls have also been heard going up the back staircase and the door to the playroom has been heard opening and closing. Upon investigation there was no living person in the room, however, many of the toys belonging to the children of the current owners would be strewn about. After this strange phenomenon had occurred several times, the lady of the house decided to put a lock on the playroom door, however, these same events still occurred.

As for the male entity; many have claimed to see him, dressed in his top hat and suit, wandering around the basement area. The owners of the inn have also claimed that cigar smoke has been smelled, as well as, seen floating upon the air in the basement. Another interesting report that seems to point to this apparition is from a guest who claimed that she could not reach the ceiling fan to turn it off. She reported that when she went to bed she suddenly felt a heavy weight on the bed beside her and the ceiling fan was then turned off, the weight then lifted from the bed.

Today, paranormal claims are still made at the inn. In fact, the Oklahoma Ghost Patrol did an investigation in the house and found quite a bit of proof to substantiate the claims.

The Haunting of the Sage Hill Bed and Breakfast Country Inn

Sage Hill Bed & Breakfast – McHenry County, Anamoose, North Dakota

Photograph ©Sage Hill Bed & Breakfast Country Inn

Built in the eighteen-hundreds, this building was originally a schoolhouse and is thought to be the first one in the state. During its schooling years, one of the superintendents died a strange and horrible death. This superintendent, described as large with bushy hair, was inspecting the school with the help of a young student. They had made their way through the school and then ventured to the basement to inspect the broiler. Somehow, the broiler caught fire and the man and young pupil were burned too death.

The school thrived over the years until its population surpassed its maximum capacity. By the early nineteen-hundreds, the building sat vacant and dilapidating. It was then purchased by a group of investors with the intentions of renovating it and putting it to good use for the community of Anamoose.

In 1996, the old schoolhouse was turned into a bed and breakfast by new owners, Jacqueline Fix and Brad Mincher. During the renovations, the new owners began to notice some strange happenings that they could not explain.

Since that time, the owners and many visitors have made reports of items being moved or simply disappearing, the scent of cigar smoke that seems to come out of nowhere and then quickly disappears and shadows moving in ones peripheral vision.

Other complaints consist of toilets flushing by themselves, lights turning on and off for no reason and unexplainable cold spots. Many here have also claimed to see apparitions, especially in the basement area, and most refuse to go down there.

Today, the Sage Hill Country Inn still has reports of unexplainable phenomena and it seems to haunted as ever.

The Haunting of the Duke Mansion Bed and Breakfast

Duke Mansion – Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, North Carolina

Address:
400 Hermitage Road
Charlotte, North Carolina 28207

Built in 1915, this beautiful Colonial mansion was first home to James Buchanan Duke, a very successful tobacco tycoon. James Duke is also remembered for the origination of Duke University, Duke Energy and the Duke Endowment.

In 1929, the home was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Cannon, who renamed the mansion “White Oaks.” One interesting fact about this couple is that they produced a daughter who later went on to date John F. Kennedy many years prior to Kennedy’s marriage to Jackie. The Cannon family lived on in the mansion until 1957 when it was purchased by Henry and Clayton Lineberger. The Linebergers restored the mansion, however, in 1966 there was a fire that gutted out the third floor and they had to spend money on restoration costs again.

In 1976, with the death of Mr. Lineberger, the mansion was left to the Duke Endowment. One year later it was placed on the local, state and national registries of historic places. The mansion was then used briefly as a small meeting center but then was sold again.

In 1978 the home was turned into condominiums. In 1989, owners of a sports media company, Rick and Dee Ray, bought the home and restored it to its former, single home, beauty. The Rays and the Duke Power Company united with the Lynwood Foundation, a non profit organization, to preserve the Duke Mansion and today the mansion is used as a bed and breakfast.

The hauntings at the Duke Mansion are said to be blamed on a man named Jon Avery. Mr. Avery was apparently a former owner of Duke Mansion, although I was not able to pinpoint the year of his residence in the home.

The story of Mr. Avery is a sad one. Jon’s wife was apparently committed to a mental hospital for reasons that are unknown. Jon stayed on at the Duke Mansion with his mother and sisters.

One day a female writer stopped by to do a historical piece on the mansion and Jon quickly befriended the woman. This friendship turned into the beginning of a new romance, however, when the woman found out that Jon was unwilling to divorce his sick wife, she ended the relationship.

Jon was devastated by this breakup and in an attempt to keep the woman in his life, he asked her to meet him one year later, dead or alive, at midnight in the circular garden located near the fountains.

One year later the woman arrived, as promised, to meet Jon. And again, he asked her to meet him, dead or alive, the following year at midnight. During the year that followed, the woman became engaged to another man. When the meeting time finally arrived, she took a friend with her because she felt it would’ve been improper to meet him alone after promising her hand to another man.

At midnight on the night of their meeting, the woman and her friend stood in the garden awaiting Jon. The woman and her friend heard the soft footsteps of Jon’s approach and when he came into view, he nearly walked right past her. She reached out to grab him by the arm but her hand went right through him. Jon turned to her and mouthed the words “Dead or Alive” before he vanished before her eyes. The shocked woman and her friend later learned that Jon had died just a few days prior to the meeting date due to a bought with polio.

It seems that this final meeting was what Jon needed to rest in peace; no other reports of Jon’s apparition have been made since.

Built in 1884, the Chelsea Hotel was originally an apartment complex. The owners of the complex filed bankruptcy in 1905 and then the building was sold and soon afterward it became the Hotel that it is today.

In the early nineteenth century, the Chelsea had a tendency to attract low income clientele, as well as, those who conducted illegal businesses within its sound proof walls.

By the 1950’s, the Chelsea started attracting artistic types and over the years since, it has given creativity to such names as Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Andy Warhol, Jimi Hendrix and Dylan Thomas. Dylan Thomas actually died in room 206 in 1953 after going on a bender that led to alcohol poisoning. Dylan’s last words are said to have been, “I’ve had eighteen straight whiskeys, and I think that’s a record!”

Another death to take place in the building was in 1978. Former musician for the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, were living at the hotel after Sid’s career took a plunge. One morning Sid called the police, requesting that they come to his apartment right away. When officers arrived, they found Nancy lying in a pool of her own blood with a knife protruding from her side. Sid was arrested for murder but died of a heroin overdose before he ever served jail time.

Over the last century, the Chelsea has seen its share of drugs, alcohol, immoral behavior, death and despair. All of these events have seemed to leave their mark on the hotels very walls, causing many to claim that the hotel is haunted.

Many who have stayed in the hotel have claimed to see the apparition of Sid Vicious near the elevator. The apparitions of Dylan Thomas, Eugene O’Neil and Thomas Wolfe have also been seen in their transparent forms in various parts of the building.

Some of the other reports here consist of cold spots or gust of cold air that come out of nowhere. Many have claimed that they were followed by phantom footsteps, touched, tapped or pushed while in their rooms or walking in the hallways. Others have stated that their personal items were thrown across the rooms or moved during the night. Lights and televisions are said to turn on and off at will. Water from the showers and sinks come on for no plausible reason. And, many have also claimed to hear whispers or muted conversations right in the room with them when no one present could have been responsible.

Today, the Chelsea Hotel continues to thrive and still seems to magically attract famous writers, actors, poets and musicians. Patrons still report paranormal activity. Apparitions still walk the hallow hallways. And many unsuspecting guests are still known to experience the hair on the back of their necks standing on end. The Chelsea is and may always be a safe haven for, not only the living, but also the dead.

Built in 1881 by successful business man, John Sise, this Queen Anne style mansion is now an inn that offers its guests thirty-four lovely rooms decorated with period antiques, a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere, round the clock staff, an elevator for guests convenience and…..ghosts? Oh yes, this one’s packed full of the paranormal!

The spooks and specters of this inn seem to have quite a unique sense of humor, though the living aren’t always amused by it. One or more of these spirits seem to spend most of their time in or around room 204. One woman who was working the front desk during the night shift claims that on that particular night the entire third floor was empty of guests. While sitting at her station she heard the ice machine being used and went up to investigate. Upon stepping out of the elevator the woman found a trail of ice cubes leading from the ice machine to room 204. The door to the room, which was previously closed and locked, was hanging wide open with a pile of ice cubes in the doorway!

On another occasion, when room 204 was occupied, the guests of that room found themselves locked out of the room at 2:00 in the morning because their key suddenly wouldn’t work in the door! These confused visitors sought help from the desk clerk who also couldn’t get the door to open with the emergency key. Finally, after trying for two hours to get the door open, the manager was called. The manager gave it a try as well but without luck. The inn was packed to its maximum that night with no rooms to spare so, they called in a locksmith. The locksmith arrived and was given the original guest key so that he could see for himself that, for some reason, it no longer worked. The locksmith put the key in the lock, turned it and the door open up! In addition to this incident, the key to room 204 is constantly coming up missing! It sounds to me like that ghost wants the room to his or herself!

The cleaning staff is even less amused by the constant pranks played by these phantoms! One maid reported some unseen person grabbing her hips as she was bent over cleaning! Another maid said that while she was cleaning, an unseen presence grabbed her gently and attempted to pull her into one of the closets!

One of the guests staying at the inn claimed that while she was in bed, an unseen presence actually laid down in the bed next to her. This specter was probably trying to get fresh with her, just as he had with the maids; I imagine he was pretty disappointed when the woman jumped up and hightailed it out of there before he had the chance!

Some of the other interesting reports here include: unexplainable cold spots, doors locking or unlocking (or refusing to unlock), items in guest rooms suddenly flying across the room for no reason, the elevator going up and down when no one is aboard, the elevator doors opening and closing for no reason, the rocking chair next to the front desk rocking when no one is sitting in it, items being moved by unseen hands, and more!

The Haunting of the Gold Hill Hotel

Gold Hill Hotel – Storey County, Virginia City, Nevada

Photograph ©Jake Slagle

Known as the oldest hotel in Virginia City, the Gold Hill Hotel and Saloon was built in 1859 and was originally known as the Riese House. The place changed hands many times and renovations and building additions were made by many of the owners.

In a building that has been standing for nearly one hundred and fifty years and with renovations and additions being made many times, it is hardly any wonder that there are claims of a haunting.

As with most hauntings, many of the common reports are made there; lights turning on and off on their own, objects going missing only to magically reappear in places that were already searched and the ever common phantom footsteps. Also reported here are the sounds of children running, giggling and playing in the hallways late at night and the strong, sudden scents of tobacco, roses and chocolate chip cookies!

The Haunting of the Osceola Inn

Osceola Inn – Osceola County, Reed City, Michigan

History of the Hotel:

The original hotel was built in 1881 by Daniel Oaks and purchased by the King brothers. Just a few years later in 1884, the wood-built hotel burned to the ground. The King brothers rebuilt a much sturdier hotel, made of bricks and three-stories high, calling it The King Hotel and Saloon.

In the early nineteen-hundreds the hotel was sold and renamed The Osceola Hotel. In the early forties, the hotel changed hands again, this time being purchased by Ray Rogalla who renamed it The Osceola Inn.

Paranormal Activities Reported:

Upon checking into the hotel you may notice a sign at the front desk asking that all ghostly activity be reported to the front desk! Apparently the place is chalked full of paranormal activity!

Some of the “ghostly activities” reported there? Well, it’s about the norm for a haunted place; phantom footsteps, bumps, thumps and unexplainable noises. Some have seen full-bodied apparitions. Some have seen shadowy figures the moved out of the corner of their eye but, as usual, these figures disappears once they turned their head. More reports tell of cold spots and cold gusts of air, disembodied voices, lights that go on and off, doors that open and close on their own and electrical gadgets and doodads going haywire for no reason.

This building has been investigated by various ghost hunting teams, as well as, psychics who claim that it truly is haunted. Personally, I’d like to see it investigated by the TAPS team!

The Haunting of the National House Inn

The National House Inn – Calhoun County, Marshall, Michigan

Photograph ©National House Inn

Built in 1835 by Andrew Mann, this two-story, brick colonial was originally a stage stop for weary coach travelers. By 1844 the house was mostly used as a railroad hotel. By 1878 the house was no longer a hotel, but a new use was found for it when it was turned into a factory that manufactured wind mills and farm wagons. In 1902, a man named Dean purchased the house and turned it into luxury apartments. For the next seventy-four years the house began to slowly fall into misuse and found itself in much need of repairs. In 1976 the house was purchased by Norm and Kathryn Kinney and Hal and Jacque Minick. The Kinney’s and the Minick’s restored the house and it reopened its doors as bed and breakfast that same year. It was after the restorations made by the Kinney’s and the Minick’s that the paranormal activity began.

The inn only seems to have one restless spirit roaming about its halls. No one knows for certain who this woman is or was but it has become apparent that she has no intentions of leaving.

“The Lady in Red” has appeared to employees and guests alike as a full-bodied, solid apparition as she roams the house. This lady has also been spotted looking out of windows on the second floor of the inn and she is said to be responsible for re-opening one of the guest room doors after it has been tightly closed.

Sightings of the Lady in Red are still made today. This bed and breakfast was also investigated by the paranormal investigators from Spirit Society and they have classified the entity between an “intelligent spirit” and “phantom”.

This mansion was built in the mid eighteen hundreds by a successful Chicago millionaire and business man named J.W. Stickney and his wife Genevieve. In life, Genevieve was a jealous woman who became quite over weight and very unhappy with her appearance. She or her husband purchased a gilt-edged mirror that made her appear slimmer. J.W. also had an elevator put in so that Genevieve could make it up to their bedroom on the second floor and he also hired a nurse to take care of her.

When J.W. Stickney died, his wife Genevieve received the shock of her life; J.W. had left most of his money to the young nurse that cared for Mrs. Stickney and apparently he had carried on a long time affair with the woman. Genevieve was devastated and went into a deep depression; this depression ended when she hung herself from the rafters above the elevator.

All was quiet in the house up until 1959 when new owners, Jim and Fern Bryant, renovated the place and turned it into a restaurant. In 1964, the Bryants sold the place to Toni Scharling and Sally & Bruce Towner; warning them that strange things were happing in the house. The new owners moved into the second floor and soon found out that there were in fact strange happenings in the house.

Reports of the Paranormal:

Many here have claimed that objects were thrown through the air at them by unseen hands, doors have been reported to open and close on their own and lights turn themselves on and off.

Some have claimed to see the solid, full-bodied apparition of a woman standing behind them as they looked into the gilt-edged mirror but when they turned the woman was gone!

Those who have ridden in the elevator have been joined by the solid apparition of Mr. J.W. Stickney himself. The elevator has since then been closed but it is still said to go up and down without any help from the living.

Knocking sounds have been reported to come from inside of closets, on walls and on doors. When these sounds are investigated, no living person has been found to be responsible.

Personal items and other objects seem to disappear of their own accord and turn up in odd, unsuspecting places throughout the house. Other objects such as mirrors and wall hangings have been found on the floor but no living person had knocked them down!

Today the inn is still in business and the claims of paranormal still occur.

The original house was built in 1707 and it started out as a two-room home built by David Howe. David originally built the home for his wife and children, however, in 1716; he added onto the home and turned it into an inn and tavern. This inn was later passed on to David’s son, Ezekiel Howe and the inn became “The Red Horse”.

Ezekiel built on more additions that practically made the house double in size. Ezekiel, keeping with family tradition, later passed the inn down to his son Adam in 1796. Adam, as with his father and grandfather, added onto the house and passed the inn down to his son Lyman. Unfortunately the family ended here; Lyman never married and therefore had no sons to pass the inn on to.

After the death of Lyman Howe, the inn was closed and was then used only for special occasions and receptions. In 1897, the home was purchased by Edward Lemon who, once again, turned in back into an inn. And, keeping with tradition, Mr. Lemon added on and did some renovating to improve the place.

In 1923, after the death of Edward Lemon, the home and its property was purchased by Henry Ford. Mr. Ford was responsible for the very last additions and renovations made to the inn. When Mr. Ford died, the inn was charitably left to the state and was then turned into a museum.

Today, the house is used as an inn and a museum.

Reports of the Paranormal:

A female entity has been seen roaming throughout the entire house. This apparition is believed to be the restless spirit of Jerusha Howe, the sister of one of the Howe family members.

Jerusha’s spirit has been reported to touch people. She has also been reported to play the piano and appear as a full-bodied apparition in front of people. Jerusha’s citrus-scented perfume has been detected in various parts of the house and many have felt her presence close by even when she made no physical appearance.

Some of the visitors who have stayed at this inn have claimed that they awoke in the middle of the night to find the entity of Jerusha Howe sitting on their bed beside them! A few of the male patrons have claimed that she gently caressed their skin or hugged them and a few of these men also claimed that she actually climbed into their bed with them!

The Longfellow’s Wayside Inn and Museum still has reports of the paranormal and guests still make reports of seeing and feeling Jerusha Howe’s presence.
