The Haunting of Canyon Hill Cemetery in Idaho

Caldwell, Canyon County, daho

On a windswept hill overlooking Caldwell, Idaho, lies one of the state's eeriest graveyards — the Canyon Hill Cemetery. What seems like a peaceful resting place by day transforms into a realm of legend, ghost stories, and paranormal intrigue once the sun sets.

The most infamous spirit tied to Canyon Hill is known simply as "The Midnight Jogger." Locals swear that if you park your car near the cemetery gates at night and wait in silence, you may hear the soft padding of footsteps… followed by a spectral figure jogging past your vehicle. The ghostly runner never looks at you, never stops — just passes by and vanishes into thin air. No one knows exactly who the Midnight Jogger was in life, but the legend has persisted for decades, and brave souls still visit in hopes of catching a glimpse.

Others claim the cemetery is haunted by the spirits of those whose graves were forgotten, left untended and overgrown. Cold spots, flickering lights, and disembodied whispers are common experiences for ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts who dare to explore after dark. One chilling account comes from a local woman who visited the grave of her grandmother — only to hear her name whispered clearly into her ear when no one else was present. She fled the site and never returned after dusk.

The cemetery's layout adds to the unsettling atmosphere. Twisting roads, cracked headstones, and uneven paths give Canyon Hill a sense of timeless abandonment, even though it’s still in use today. The highest point of the hill is said to be the most active — a spot where several ghost hunters have recorded strange EMF spikes and unexplained voices.

For those who feel brave enough to explore, Canyon Hill offers not just a graveyard, but a glimpse into the shadows of the unknown. The cemetery serves as a reminder that not all souls rest easy… and not every jogger at midnight is among the living.

The Haunting of Ball Cemetery

Frequent reports of paranormal activity have made Ball Cemetery a subject of interest. In 2005, the Paranormal Research and Investigative Studies Midwest (P.R.I.S.M.) conducted an investigation, unearthing compelling evidence that lends credence to the haunting claims—details of which can be found in the link provided at the conclusion of this article.

While the cemetery's historical background may not be particularly captivating, its grounds boast a myriad of intriguing phenomena. Accounts range from apparitions and physical assaults to the presence of glowing orbs, presenting a diverse spectrum of eerie occurrences. It is essential to note that the surrounding neighbors exhibit a protective stance towards the cemetery, reportedly brandishing shotguns at night for trespassers. As a precaution, obtaining permission and exploring during daylight hours are strongly advised.

Among the reported apparitions, a male figure has been witnessed wandering among the tombstones, exhibiting a propensity for violence towards certain visitors. This phantom is also associated with unexplained bruises that materialize unexpectedly on the arms and legs of those who venture into the cemetery.

Additionally, a spectral woman is said to roam the grounds, implicated in incidents of tugging at people's clothing, disembodied laughter, and a faint, almost imperceptible female voice frequently reported by visitors.

Various other paranormal phenomena include sightings of orbs and mists, phantom footsteps, unaccountable noises, disembodied voices, sensations of being observed or pursued, and even accounts of tombstones inexplicably toppling over and repositioning themselves. The range of supernatural encounters at Ball Cemetery contributes to its mystique, making it a site worth approaching with caution and respect.

The Haunting of White Cemetery

White Cemetery – Lake County, Barrington, Illinois

Established in the early 1800s, the White Cemetery has become a focal point for paranormal reports over the years, attracting both visitors and graveyard workers alike.

Witnesses frequently describe encountering glowing orbs or balls of light meandering through the graveyard. In some instances, these ethereal orbs traverse the fence, drifting across the road or even finding their way into nearby homes. Hazy, misty apparitions have also been reported, often seen among the tombstones or near trees after nightfall.

One notable specter is that of an elderly woman, with many motorists recounting incidents where she seemingly flags them down for assistance before vanishing into thin air before their very eyes.

Adding to the eerie ambiance is the apparition of a deceased gangster, occasionally appearing in the rearview mirrors of passing vehicles. However, when drivers turn to get a better look, the mysterious figure is nowhere to be found.

Two particularly intriguing reports set this haunted cemetery apart. Some witnesses claim to have seen a black phantom car, while others report glimpsing a house that had burned down many years ago. Both of these phantom entities, once observed, inexplicably vanish within seconds, leaving an air of mystery lingering over the White Cemetery.

The Haunting of the Bowman Estate & Mausoleum

The Bowman Estate - Rutland County, Cuttingsville, Vermont

In the early to mid-eighteenth century, the Bowman home emerged as the residence of the affluent farmer, John Bowman, who, alongside his wife and children, enjoyed a life filled with happiness and prosperity. However, tragedy cast its somber shadow over the Bowman family, transforming Mr. Bowman into a widower and bereft of children. The precise circumstances surrounding the untimely demise of Mrs. Bowman and her offspring remain shrouded in mystery, with the specter of diseases prevalent in that century looming as a plausible cause.

In response to the heart-wrenching loss, Mr. Bowman commissioned the construction of a mausoleum just across the road from his once joyful abode. Adding a striking and somewhat enigmatic touch to the scene, he engaged the talents of 125 sculptors to craft a statue in his likeness. This life-sized effigy stands outside the mausoleum, depicting Mr. Bowman on bended knee, clasping a wreath and a key in an intriguing portrayal.

The ethereal realm intertwines with the mortal at the Bowman home, as sightings of a ghostly woman, believed to be the departed Mrs. Bowman, have been recounted throughout the premises. One particularly chilling incident involves this spectral figure supposedly admonishing a child from a tour group. The child, mischievously sticking out her tongue at a portrait on the wall, found herself on the receiving end of an unexpected blow when the very same portrait dislodged itself and struck her in the head, witnessed by a perplexed crowd.

Yet another eerie occurrence lingers at the top of the staircase, where a palpable sense of foreboding has been reported. Speculation surrounds a mysterious stain in the vicinity, rumored to be a bloodstain, hinting at a potential connection to one of the tragic deaths within the house.

Transformed into a museum in the present day, the Bowman home remains a repository of historical intrigue and paranormal phenomena. Testaments of ghostly encounters continue to flood in, prompting a strict prohibition against the presence of living individuals on the grounds after nightfall. The haunting legacy of the Bowman home persists, weaving together the threads of history, tragedy, and the inexplicable into a tapestry of supernatural lore.

The Haunting of the Resurrection Cemetery

Resurrection Cemetery – Cook County, Justice, Illinois

One of the most well-known ghosts in Illinois is called "Resurrection Mary." Mary is not just a story; there are legal records of people claiming to see her, and there's even physical evidence supporting these accounts.

While Mary's true identity remains unknown, many believe she was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Archer Road. According to the legend, Mary attended a dance with her boyfriend, but for some reason, she left alone. As she walked along Archer Road, a car hit her, and the driver didn't stop, leaving Mary to die there.

Sightings of Mary's ghost have been reported for over seventy years, starting in the early 1930s. One account involves a man named Jerry Palus, who met a woman at a dance shortly after Mary's death. They danced all night, and when Jerry offered to drive her home, she became anxious near Resurrection Cemetery. She asked him to stop, jumped out of the car, and disappeared just before reaching the cemetery gate.

In 1971, a taxi driver picked up a disoriented young woman on Archer Road. When they approached the cemetery, she yelled to stop, and when the driver turned to talk to her, she vanished from the back seat.

In 1976, a man reported seeing a frantic young woman inside the cemetery, pulling at the bars as if trapped. Officer Pat Homa responded, finding no one inside but discovered outward-bent heavy steel bars with small hand impressions burned into them. These bars were later removed by the cemetery administrators due to the attention they attracted. You can check the picture below for evidence.

A few days later, the police received another call. A distressed woman reported hitting a young woman with her car. When the police arrived, they found the shaken woman sitting beside a human-shaped impression in the snow, still holding her CB radio. When asked about the body, she said the woman she hit disappeared as they approached.

In 1978, a married couple driving down Archer Road encountered a woman standing in the middle of the road. Despite slamming the brakes, the car passed right through her. The apparition turned into mist and vanished.

In August 1980, there was a surge in reports of sightings and car collisions with a woman resembling Mary. Despite numerous police dispatches, nothing was found. Over the years, hundreds of similar reports have been made.

Resurrection Cemetery is known for Mary, the most famous ghost in Illinois. However, she's not the only restless spirit. People have reported a horse-drawn hearse driving strangely and disappearing through the cemetery gates. Other strange occurrences are often attributed to Mary, whether she's responsible or not.

The Haunting of the Lafayette Cemetery

Lafayette Pioneer Cemetery – Yamhill County, Lafayette, Oregon

During the late eighteen-hundreds, many a woman lost her life after being accused of being a witch; whether the accusations were true or not. Back then, methods of interrogation consisted of flogging, hanging, branding, dunking, and many more techniques that were much more severe and painful. Basically the accused would be tortured until they confessed.

A woman, whose true identity remains a mystery to this day, lived in the town of Lafayette during that period and was put too death by hanging after being found guilty of practicing witchcraft. Fortunately for this woman, being hanged was one of the less brutal methods of death, however, she still holds a grudge and isn’t afraid to let the people of Lafayette know it.

The Lafayette Cemetery seems to have several restless spirits roaming its grounds, but the accused witch is perhaps the most frightening and active, making her presence known at any time during the day, night or changing seasons.

Many of the visitors who have entered here have claimed to see the witch’s apparition either standing silently or walking through the graveyard. Some have claimed that she laughed at them or chased them out of the front gates. Some have even caught the witch’s voice on EVP’s; one woman recorded her saying “Run Home!”

If these were the only claims, most people wouldn’t be afraid to enter the cemetery, however, the reports have also become physical. Many have been chased out of the cemetery, leaving there with deep cuts up and down their backs. Those who laugh and question these stories have had the surprise of their lives when the victims have lifted their shirts to reveal the scars!

Today, the cemetery still stands and the reports of the witch are still made, however, most do not risk their skin or their freedom to enter since there was a no trespassing rule put into effect.
